This was a more structured improvisation. I knew the basic shape of the overall piece, with the curved form moving up along the right and a figure inside. I just hadn’t really figured it out until I’d started getting further into the pencil stage. It’s fitting that the figure turned out to be a mermaid, because apparently May is #mermay on social media – the month where illustrators draw and post mermaids for fun.

Arches cold press watercolor paper, brush, Koh-I-Noor ink, and watercolor.

Printed on Red River Aurora Natural White 64lb fine art paper using dye inks.
